Hungarian speech

Speech is one of the most complex acoustic products of human beings. This website will help you gain insight into the secrets of speech waveforms. Until the 20th century, it was only a dream of mankind to know the detailed structure, the operation, perception and comprehension mechanisms of speech.

The book HUNGARIAN SPEECH is also linked to the website, It was published by Akadémia Kiadó in 2010. It contains 700 pages of detailed information about hungarian speech research and speech technology applications. We wish you good browsing on the website and in the book.

Who we are

Speech research is a special field, although speech is a natural activity for humans. Unraveling the ‘secrets’ of speech requires knowledge of several disciplines at once. The speech researcher must be familiar with physics, physiology, phonetics, linguistics, engineering, mathematics and computer science. It follows from all this that cultivating the science of speech technology requires teamwork. At the beginning, the results were still associated with famous personalities, such as Farkas Kempelen polyhistor, Béla Gáti electrical engineer, Tamás Tarnóczy physicist, and Gyula Lazíczius phonetician. However, the content of this website and the results published here have all been created as a team. Such a team was the group of researchers in the Phonetics Laboratory of the Institute of Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences from the end of 1970s. Parallel to this the speech research group has begun the research work as a team at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering of the Budapest University of Technology (today TMIT SmartLab). We meet their ideas and results in almost every detail of this website.

Our mission

Speech research in Hungary also began in the beginning of the 20th century, although Farkas Kempelen’s work and his book had been known already for more than 100 years. Since then, the world has come a long way and Hungarian researchers and developers have come a long way too. Phonetics, and speech acoustics research although digital technology have provided the basis for the digitization of speech sygnal, the solution of automatic text-to-speec conversion, the implementation of automatic speech recognition and speech to tex conversion, although automatic speech to speech translation, and the implementation of many everyday and special applications based on speech technology. The results of speech technology have become an integral part of our life during the first two decades of the 21-th century. Mobile phones speak and translate, and automatic subtitling is possible in the media. One of our goals is to present the important stages of this huge development, like a digital multimedia museum of Hungarian speech technology. Our other goal is to give young people an insight into this strange science of speech technology, mainly for educational purposes, and to inspire them to come up with new ideas.
