The Experimental Institute of the Hungarian Post

The first limited vocabulary speech synthesis in Hungarian

The cradle of digital speech processing in Hungary was the Experimental Institute of the Hungarian Post (PKI), where the research was conducted under the leadership of György Takács. In 1973, they got a device called the PDP 8e measurement controller (computer) that operated with 8 Kwords of RAM, a DOS operating system, and a magnetic disk storage. In addition to the original analog input, PKI also produced its own analog output.

It was suitable for speech analysis and speech signal generation. Digital speech based telecommunications services has made these services much more effective. This was the case, for example, when a voice message was superimposed on the dial tone, thus the information has reached immediately the subscribers when she/he lifted the receiver.

A speech synthesizer supported number change information system was introduced in 1982 to inform subscribers. Synthesized speech was integrated into the automatic wake-up service and was also used for Toto-Lotto information.
