MULTIVOX

The first 8-language TTS synthesizer on the European market

The Multivox-8 text-to-speech synthesizer was the first multilingual text-to-speech converter system at the end of the 1980-ies that spoke 7 languages in addition to Hungarian: German, Dutch, Spanish, Finnish, Italian, Arabic and Esperanto. The speech-generating unit of the system was an external hardware that contained the circuit with the PCF 8200 chip, and the loudspeaker.

This box was controlled by the software units developed for the 8 languages. The hardware was connected to the PC through a parallel port. The Multivox-8 multilingual speech synthesizer was also exhibited at CeBit in Hannover three times. It has been marketed in Europe by NIKOL Kkt. between 1990-2000. German and Austrian companies bought the patent in 1991.
